What do I need in my
Pocket Office ?

On the road I need:

1. To send and receive large numbers e-mails and attachments quickly and reliably.

In the UK I dial-up 100% reliably through NTL www.ntlworld.com
although only one landline can be registered. The cost is £15 a month for unlimited 24x7 access and you get £15 of normal telephone calls free.

Away from the registered landline I dial up to www.nildram.co.uk or connect via
the Infra-red port of my mobile phone because the Nildram log on procedure is minimal and quick. So is www.tiscali.com  Compuserve is not so easy.

My mailbox is 100% reliably handled by www.nildram.co.uk at minimal cost. Another mailbox is at www.ntlworld.com and both have web mail just in case everything fails and I have to head for a cyber-cafe. Hasn't happened yet.

Overseas I connect, usually faultlessly to any local ISP which is a member of the www.gric.com global network, or now in 2002 I generally use the roaming network provided by www.nildram.co.uk  Charges are nominal, pence or cents.

I send and receive FAX via www.trinité.com
and read FAX with a free fax viewer for tiff files called PQView 2.0.13
from www.hanaho.com

2. To write and spell-check e-mails in at least two languages.

I do this through Pocket Outlook
and HPC Spell, and HPC Notes from
www.phatware.com
and Platinum Access Panel from
www.developerone.com

3. To have Internet access at reasonable speeds for things like viewing timetables, reading the BBC News and sending SMS messages to colleague's mobile phones in the UK.

I send the SMS messages free by logging on to the www.genie.co.uk website.
I have wireless and PC enabled AvantGo
www.avantgo.com for automatic updating of webpages such as BBC News in light format.

4. To access and make small updates to our 500 page web site.

I do this through H-Bomb HTMl editor www.handango.com
And FTP through PE FTP program also from Handango.

5. To be able to access our bank accounts and do on-line ticket booking.

For a special Pocket PC bank on-line connection www.nationwide.co.uk.

6. To consult with Word documents and Excel Spreadsheets.

7. My daughter ( and me too I suppose) likes to play games to pass the time on journeys.

Both www.handango.com and www.tucows.com have a good selection,
many for free, and there are more for free on the Microsoft website,
choose handhelds and then downloads.
